Camera, Lens and Memory Card Recommendations for Sports Photography
Ready to dive into the exciting world of sports photography? Picking your first camera can feel a bit overwhelming, but let's make it fun! First things first: you've got to choose a team – Canon or Nikon. Think of it like picking your favorite sports franchise; once you're in, you're committed (at least for lenses!). Canon lenses only work with Canon cameras, and the same goes for Nikon. So, choose wisely!
Next up, what kind of action shots are you after? Indoor or outdoor sports? This is crucial because it'll heavily influence the type of camera you need. As a Canon shooter specializing in outdoor sports photos, I'm happy to mentor you with all of the knowledge I've gained though my expereinces. Below is a list and description of the camera gear I use to capture the action.
I started out using a Canon EOS 90D, which was fine for learning. When I was ready to take my game to the next level, the Canon EOS R5 is an amazing jump forward. It's the mirrorless powerhouse you've been waiting for! The shutter-speed captures the action crystal clear and you'll see the bang for your buck the moment you download your first set of images. This Canon RF 100-500mm lens is seriously amazing! It's a HUGE upgrade from my old Canon 70-200mm Lens – the extra reach lets me capture all the action way further away, and the images are so much sharper! Specifically, as you photograph faster kids playing on larger fields, you'll see a remarkable difference between what the 70-200mm and the 100-500mm can do.
When I first started photographing sports, I had no mentor. I made all of the mistakes including having only one battery for my camera. BIG MISTAKE! You need AT LEAST two batteries in any given situation. I keep three batteries on-hand and charged at every event along with the charger.
This 128 GB Power Cfexpress Memory Card is the only memory card that can handle the action shots being captured by the camera and lens. I also have a Delkin Devices 512GB POWER CFexpress Type B Memory Card (DCFX1-512) that gives me piece of mind when I'm photographing all day because I don't have to worry about running our of memory. Start out shooting with the 512 and tuck the 128 in your pocket for "just-in-case". You can grab a great card reader here: SanDisk Extreme PRO
Say goodbye to agonizingly slow card transfers! Delkin card readers are the photographer's secret weapon for a smooth and efficient workflow. Fast, reliable, and built to last, they'll free up your time so you can get back to capturing those incredible shots.
My Passport hard drives are designed specifically for photographers, delivering reliable backup, ample space for even your largest projects, and seamless integration into your workflow. Focus on your art, not your tech.
